Ragani

An award-winning producer, Ragani (pronounced RAH-gah-nee) leads Milwaukee’s renowned Kirtan with Ragani, one of the largest independent and ongoing kirtan scenes in the US. For the past twenty-five years, she has led kirtan in the US and abroad.

Currently based in Milwaukee, and named as “100 Milwaukeeans You Need to Know” (OnMilwaukee.com), Ragani has been featured on FOX and NBC affiliates and in numerous regional, national and international publications, including a full-color, two-page feature in the Feb 2009 issue of Recording Magazine, which focused on the gear and production techniques used in Ragani's recordings. Ragani will be featured in a forthcoming kirtan documentary movie, scheduled for release in 2010. In addition, Ragani is the featured model for the award-winning book, Yoga: Mastering the Basics, and its two accompanying videos.

At the age of eight, Ragani met the legendary yoga master, Sri Swami Rama, founder of the Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy, and former Shankaracharya of India. Under his tutelage, she was personally trained in the Himalayan Tradition of yoga sciences, meditation and eastern music, including kirtan. She further studied classical Indian vocals under her guru-brother, Laxmi Narayan Tiwari from Kanpur, India. A second-generation yoga practitioner, Ragani has had lifelong involvements in yoga, meditation, and complementary medicine. Ragani's deep love of yoga and meditation has led her to India's Himalayas, where she and her husband have traveled and studied with many known and unknown yoga masters.

In 2006, CDBaby selected Ragani’s album, Ancient Spirit (Kirtan Café, Vol. II), as their Editor's Pick. This album also landed itself as the “Top Pick” album with music distributors, was awarded “Runner Up” in the Best Production category of the International Music Aid awards, and was named “Best of the Year” (2006) by Backroads Music. Her award-winning Kirtan Café albums are recognized for their lush vocals, rich world instrumentation, and the sacred mantras of India. Her songs “[bring] to mind a winning collaboration between Enya and the sadly departed George Harrison.” (Conscious Choice Magazine)
